Performed at Rivington Design House Gallery, NYC
camerawork by Nereida Trujillo
A performance contrasting the social preparations and rituals surrounding communal eating with emotional preparations for processing the loss of a significant relationship, and the rituals associated with death. The work questions the notion of preparing for a traumatic event, and explores thoughts on the body/spirit relationship.
Performers slowed their movements and speech to quarter speed, creating a heightened awareness of minute gestures. Audio recordings of couples in long-term relationships speaking about their personal memories and thoughts on the subject of death were installed in the public space outside the gallery. Visitors were invited to move inside and outside of the gallery space at will throughout the duration of the performance.
With performers: Shantell Cargle, Lucia Cousins, Denis Jasavic, Birgit Larson, Leoties Paredes, Alberto Cortes, and Kristen Olds
